Artistic Swimming at the 2024 Paris Olympic Games
Artistic Swimming at the 2024 Paris Olympic Games: A distinct sport on the Olympic calendar, artistic swimming mixes music and water acrobatics. The sport has two competitions held during the Olympic Games: an eight-person team competition and a duet competition. Every event consists of several performances, comprising both technical and free routines. There is an acrobatic routine in the team competition as well. A panel of judges assigns points to competitors based on their choreography, song selection, degree of difficulty, execution, and synchronisation. In order to perform routines well, swimmers competing in artistic swimming must be flexible and maintain a high level of coordination and attention to detail.
Since the sport of artistic swimming was added to the Olympic program at the 1984 Los Angeles Games, only female competitors have been permitted.
But in 2022, the body that oversees the sport changed its regulations to let a maximum of two male competitors per country to compete in the team event. Though none of the ten teams that qualified were announced, it was anticipated that male competitors will compete in artistic swimming at the Olympics in Paris in 2024.
North American nations, in particular the United States and Canada, had early success in the Olympic swimming program. Ever since the 2000 Sydney Games, Russia (including the Russian Olympic Committee) has become the clear leader, taking home every gold medal in both sports. The streak will end, though, because Russia is not permitted to enter a team or duet in Paris as a result of an IOC ruling about the current conflict in Ukraine. The United States will compete in the Paris Games’ duet and team competitions for the first time since Beijing 2008.
The 2024 Paris Olympics will feature artistic swimming from August 5–10.
When did artistic swimming diverge from synchronised swimming?
The worldwide governing body of aquatic sports changed the name “synchronised swimming” to “artistic swimming” in 2017 in an attempt to increase public awareness and appeal. Authorities blamed the public’s misunderstanding of the phrase “synchronised,” which never described swimmers mirroring one another but rather the music.

The 2024 Olympics in Paris will feature artistic swimming at the Olympics Aquatics Centre.
The only other permanent sports facility constructed for the Paris Games is the Le Bourget Climbing Wall. In 2024, diving, water polo, and artistic swimming will all take place at the Olympic Aquatic Centre. The Centre is a low-carbon building dedicated to its energy and environmental performance because it was built with solely materials derived from biosources.
Following the Games, the location will continue to hold significant national and international competitions, such the European Aquatics Championships and the World Aquatics Championships, in order to meet the demands of the French population as well as the host region, Seine-Saint-Denis.
